Pink Ribbon Bakery was featured on Thursday’s episode of Shaw TV’s go! Vancouver. Thank you Christine Vu for giving me the opportunity to tell my business story. I felt all awkward and nerdy on camera, but I think it turned out well. Here’s the video. I come on about 4 minutes in. Enjoy!

If you want a fabulous custom cake from Pink Ribbon Bakery but you have no idea what theme you want, let me help you out a little bit! I have a list of themes that I’ve been keeping in my back pocket for quite some time now, and I would absolutely love the opportunity to use a few. Here are some of my DREAM CAKES… in no particular order:

-Rainbow Brite

Without a doubt, this was my favorite cartoon when I was a kid. I used to go to the movie store with my Grandpa and pick out 3 or 4 different Rainbow Brite VHS tapes. When we got back home I made him sit and watch them with me. Every single one! The cake I would make would be super colorful with rainbows and stars shooting off in every direction. I’d have Rainbow Brite sitting on the top tier and then Twink would be closer to the bottom tossing sparkly stars everywhere. I might even make this cake for my own birthday this year if no one orders it beforehand!

-The Simpson’s

I’ve always wanted to make a cake of the Simpson’s sitting on their couch. I would want to add all the little details too. Homer would be holding a can of Duff, Bart would have his skateboard and a smartass look on his face, and Lisa would be rolling her eyes looking annoyed. I think this would be the perfect cake for a Simpson’s loving man.

-Charlie Brown (Peanuts)

I have two ideas for this theme. One would be to make Snoopy and Woodstock on top of the red dog house. Something about the simplicity of this cake is so appealing to me. I think this would be a great cake from one best friend to another. The other idea I have would be to make Lucy in her booth giving Charlie some 5 cent psychiatric help. I think this would be a cute little cake for a girlfriend to give her boyfriend.

-The Nightmare Before Christmas

If you know me then you know that I am a huge fan of all things Tim Burton. Especially anything to do with The Nightmare Before Christmas. My own Christmas tree wouldn’t be complete without my Jack Skellington ornaments every year. I would be thrilled to make any type of cake related to this movie but two characters that stand out most to me are Zero the dog and the Mayor of Halloweentown.

-The Muppets

What cake artist doesn’t want to make a Muppets cake? Every idea around this theme is a good one. A Miss Piggy and Kermit the Frog Valentine’s Day cake. A Beaker and Bunsen cake for the graduating scientist. A cute Gonzo and Fozzie baby shower cake. A Swedish Chef birthday cake for the chef in the family… the list goes on. I love them all!

-Animaniacs

Who remembers this cartoon? This was my “I need to run home after school so I don’t miss it” show. My brother and I can still sing every word to the opening theme song. I want to make a cake with Yakko, Wakko, and Dot sitting in front of the Warner Brothers Tower with Pinky and The Brain running around somewhere in the background.

Wow… after proofreading this post I realized that I still have a sick obsession with cartoons. All of the themes that I listed were favorite parts of my childhood and I guess I’ve chosen the best line of work to stay connected with them.

What are some of your favorite themes that you would want to see in cake form? I’d love to hear some of your ideas!

One question I am asked all the time is “What’s your favorite cake you’ve ever made?” It stumps me every time because I love all my cakes… like as much as I love my pets (and sometimes more).

Here are my top 20 favorite cakes over the last little while.

This was a cake I made for a wedding in September. It was located at Roma Hall in New Westminster and it was made for a fantastic couple. I love it because it’s a great combination of traditional and modern. The lace pattern was definitely a lot of work but I was so happy with how this one turned out.

My friend Anthony (aka DJ Physik) is a poker junkie. He recently participated in the World Series Of Poker in Las Vegas. When he plays, he always uses a little Tokidoki unicorn or whatever that thing is to “protect” his chips and cards. I made a cake for him to bring it all together. He loved it and so did I!

The color combination, the cameo, the hint of gold, the elegance. Talk about my dream cake! This cake design has inspired me to make a beautiful vintage winter window display for my bakery. Say that 3 times fast. Stay tuned for pictures in the next coming months.

Obviously! These cupcakes helped me meet the one and only Snoop! What an awesome experience.

This was my second “life-size” dog cake. These are the times when I love my airbrush. I would have not been able to get him to look like that without it. And check out the blinged out collar! I’d like to make a pug, or a bulldog next. I want to recreate those wrinkled faces!

Yes I know, super simple right? But I just love it! Maybe it’s the rocker in me that likes the skull design so much. I’ll tell ya… any 4 year old girl who wants this as her birthday cake is pretty damn rad in my books!

Who doesn’t love the art of Dr. Seuss? Being able to recreate his images into cake form is really something special. I grew up on his books so I look forward to every order like this that I get.

I think what I love most about this cake is the color combination. There’s something about teal and red together that is so appealing to me. And of course the sock monkey is just adorable too!

This cake was made for a company who has a summer picnic every year. This was their first time ordering a custom cake for their event and man were they ever pleased. Although the details were tiny and tedious, it’s cakes like these where I take a step back when I’m finished and think “F#*$ YA!”

To be honest, if I got a birthday cake like this when I was younger I would have probably asked my dad “Where can I smash in my Ninja Turtle?”. To see the look on those little girls faces when I deliver it though totally makes my day. I used a pattered mat to roll over the fondant to get the texture in the bows, and a pillowed texture guide for the sides of the cake. I may be helping in creating some future divas by making cakes like these, but I love them!

Now these are my kind of cupcakes! Not only did I get to personally deliver them to Kat Von D, but I had a blast making them as well.

I think this is another example of me just loving the color combination. This was such a unique design for a wedding cake. The combination of fresh flowers and the ribbon trim added the perfect touch to such a vibrant colored cake.

This order was made for a bridal shower. I love the tea party feel to it. The pastel colors with hints of gold and silver looked fabulous together.

These cupcakes were a surprise gift for a doggy daycare center from a very happy customer. Making each little dude was super fun. Being a basset owner myself, I had to throw one of those guys in the mix. The daycare staff loved them!

Baby gender reveal cakes! SO FUN!! The couple goes to their doctor and has the baby’s sex passed to them in a closed envelope which they immediately bring to me. I dye the cake inside either pink or blue depending on what they’re having. Then, they get together with their family and experience the big reveal together. I think the gender reveal cake is the best way to go if you’re planning on finding out the sex of your baby before it’s born.

Another simple design, but one that I adore. The diamond ribbon trim is the perfect way to bring a little bling into such a simple design. This cake looked beautiful at it’s destination. The newlyweds were very pleased.

This was a cake that I made for the crew over at Real Weddings Magazine. The pop of bright color against the fresh white fondant is really what I love most about this cake.

Talk about a milestone! What an opportunity for me to make such a special birthday cake. The design here is simple and elegant which I think was perfect for the celebration.

Possibly my favorite wedding cake to date. This was the wedding cake for the same bride as the bridal shower cake above. Unfortunately, the lighting was not fabulous at the venue but you can totally see why it’s my fave! This 1920′s Marie Antoinette design is now my new favorite cake to make. There are so many possibilities when it comes to designing a cake like this and the delicate colors can be made in any combination. These cakes will never get old to me.

So there you have it folks. It’s obvious that I can’t just pick one favorite. I have a favorite part about every cake, whether it be the design or the story behind it.

Here’s to many more!

Ok so here is how the story goes. I’ll start off by saying that I have my best friend Anthony to thank for this whole experience. You may know him better as 6x DJ of the YEAR DJ Physik so throughout the rest of this post I will refer to him as Physik. Keep in mind that I have been so damn busy with my business lately that I didn’t even realize Snoop Dogg was coming to Vancouver until Thursday, and the concert was Friday.

Physik: So are you going to make cupcakes for Snoop Dogg?
Me: (not knowing he was coming) Ummmmm… not that I know of?
Physik: Oh.
Me: Weirdo. How would that even happen?
Physik: Well I’m DJing both of his concerts tomorrow night and I have 2 tickets to give out. I can give you one.
Me: OMG… EFF YAH!

And then the brainstorming for design begins. I knew these cupcakes had to scream Snoop so they had to be super personalized and memorable. Here was what I came up with.

Pretty cool right?

So I get to the Commodore and through many security checks, I manage to get myself to the door of the greenroom. You should have seen me walking through the crowds with this big pink box labeled “To Snoop Dogg”. People seriously thought I was some super crazed fan. You would too right? I had to tell every security guard “No I am not trying to poison Mr. Snoop Dogg sir”. Physik was on stage DJing at this point so I had his superhero girlfriend Adriana work her charm to help get me back there. By then it was time for Snoop to hit the stage. This was my view of the concert.

After the concert all the “fine bitches” back stage were led to a room labeled “Snoopadelics”. I could tell right away what was going on. I took my chance and pulled Snoop’s DJ aside and said “Listen… I’m not here for the same reason the rest of these girls are. I really shouldn’t be out this late (2am at this point) because I have to get up at 5am to bake cakes for my clients. I only came to bring him these” and I opened the box to show him. I can’t even count how many times how many times he said “These are fuckin DOPE!”

Next thing I knew I was in a room with Snoop, his uncle Junebug, his son Spanky, and a security guard who looked exactly like Jesse James.

He LOVED the cupcakes! He was in awe for the first little bit. He said “Wow, this is so thoughtful. Thank you so much. You are a true artist. How long did this take you?” I said “3 hours” He said “you have taken the time to learn about me and create these cupcakes based on everything that Snoop Dogg is all about. I am very impressed!” He kissed me on the cheek right after he said that. EEK! Then he asked me about my bakery and from there he wanted to know my whole story. I stayed and talked with him for about 15 minutes. I couldn’t even believe what was actually happening. I just kept thinking to myself, ~Holy shit… this is Snoop Dogg right here in front of me, and he’s asking me about my business~ WOW!!! He made sure he knew my name and he took 3 business cards, one for every pocket so he wouldn’t lose them. He was no nice and so polite and honestly a true gentleman. I couldn’t have been happier.

This morning he Instagram’d and Tweeted my cupcakes. The picture made it to the popular page and the likes are just ticking away right now. Such a trip!

A HUGE thank you again to DJ Physik for giving me the opportunity to do this. You are the bestest!

~Sheila

Over the last little while I’ve had the pleasure of getting to know Erin Ireland. I’ve got to tell you… it is SO refreshing to know someone who’s so passionate about what they do. Erin lives for finding the greatest food around, and helps in promoting the items that she believes are TO DIE FOR! She is a food columnist for the Metro Newspaper and Vancouver View Magazine. She is the mother of “To Die For” Banana Bread (absolutely delicious!) which is sold in many spots throughout the Vancouver area. She is also a regular guest on Urban Rush, Vancouver’s entertainment talk show. During her time on the show, Erin goes over her new favorite food products on the market today. She learns the product inside and out and then features it on the show to let everyone know how amazing it really is!

Erin Ireland featured Pink Ribbon Bakery’s cupcakes on Urban Rush yesterday. She asked me to recreate the cupcakes I made for Kat Von D because she fell in love with the story. She also asked for a few of her other favorites such as Chai Tea Latte, Rootbeer Float, Key Lime Pie, and Maple Bacon.

Here is the clip to Erin’s “To Die For Food” piece on Urban Rush. My favorite part is when Michael Eckford “OMG’s” over my Rootbeer Float cupcakes. Haha

If you know me, you know that I love tattoos. I have a large collection of body art that I am quite proud of. All of my tattoos are done by the fabulous Mark Ainsworth of Rain City Tattoo in Vancouver. He has become a best friend of mine over the years. We are both so ridiculously busy with our businesses that sometimes I’ll book myself in for a little piece just to hang out and catch up for a while. Nothing like some good old tattoo therapy to relieve some stress

When you think of tattoo artists, I’m pretty sure one of the first that comes to mind is Kat Von D. What can I say? This chick is so rad an MEGA talented. I plan to one day have a tattoo of the Winged Victory of Samothrace done by her. I’ll be saving the whole right side of my back for that day to come.

Kat has been someone who I’ve admired for quite some time. Although her form of art is so much different than mine, her creativity is really something to look up to. I have been inspired time and time again by this woman. I had a pretty kickass opportunity to meet her the other day. I met her a while back at a Chapters book signing, but this time was different. As soon as I heard she was coming to town (which was the day before) I decided to make her some personalized cupcakes!

Pretty awesome right? I was actually thinking about making her a cake at first, but I decided to wear some sky high neon pink pumps instead. Holding a cake for however long I would have had to AND stand in those things? Not likely. Plus I thought it might be super weird and creepy for me to show up with a cake. I think security would have had a question or two for me once I got close to her. When I told my friend DJ Physik that I was thinking of making her a cake, he said he immediately thought of that scene where Borat meets Pamela Anderson. Not good. Cupcakes it was. Look how happy she was!

As soon as she opened up that box I jumped up and down a little. I was so stoked that KAT VON FREAKIN D was opening a box from Pink Ribbon Bakery. What a trip! It was such a proud moment for me and one that I will never forget. Once she thanked me she made sure this picture happened next.

Oh so happy! Right after I left I called my husband and then my dad. Yes my dad thinks Kat is a total babe and he was so excited to hear about my experience. By the way, I totally have Kat to thank for my dad’s open mind on the whole tattoo thing. Until he saw her on TV, he was not a fan of his little girl covering herself in permanent art. As soon as he decided she was still a 10 despite the tattoos, he changed his mind and is now excited to see me every time I get a new one.

That night, Kat posted two photos on her Instagram. One of her and I with the cupcakes which got almost 15,000 likes, and then one of the cupcakes alone which got over 34,000 likes!!! Those numbers are incredible! I woke up the next morning in shock at how many notifications I had. I honestly thought it was broken for a second.

2 days after meeting a superstar, I held a fundraiser at my bakery for the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation. Through social media, a lot of the people who stopped by knew about my experience with Kat and asked all about it. That day I passed my $500 goal and raised almost $1400. Talk about a kickass week!

This was definitely a moment that I will never forget. It was truly an honor making cupcakes for someone I admire so much. From one artist to another with so much love and respect.

Rock and Roll

*Yes a blog post without photos. No it’s not boring*

Nobody said it was easy. Well… a few people did. But what do they know.

The bakery is a success people! I’m up and running and rocking and rolling. Business is booming and only getting boominger! Yup. My location on 6th Street in New Westminster is prime and I love meeting and greeting the locals. I have been embraced by the whole community and I am feeling so welcome. I have come to the conclusion that New Westminster rules. I love living in and owning a business in this kickass city.

*side-note* – A HUGE thank you to Tercera Construction Group for building me the bakery of my dreams. My requests were at times rather fairytale-ish but I literally feel like Alice in freakin Wonderland every time I step into the place. Steve and Dennis, you guys rock. http://terceragroup.com/

Behind the scenes, I am still a bit of a control freak which has led me to this minor little “Crisis of Meaning” if you will. I have put A LOT on my plate. I’m not saying that my eyes were to big for my stomach, but soon I may need a faithful companion to throw a scrap to here and there. My brother has been a HUGE help. He is at the bakery every weekend rockin a big pink cupcake on his tshirt and working his butt off. You know what this kid does? He shows up around 9am after I’ve been there working away for 3 hours and he does all my damn dishes!!! Like… who’s little brother does that? He is a true team player and I can’t thank him enough. Dad raised us well I guess.

As much work as Brandon does though, it’s not enough. I think I have to hire someone… DUN DUN DUN! Do I feel like I’m giving up control a little bit? Yes. Do I feel like I’m disappointed in myself for not being able to handle everything on my own? Yes. Do I have trust issues? Yes. Do I know that I’m being a little bit ridiculous? Yes. Do I need to read the E Myth? I think so.

Yesterday of all random days I realized that in order to be successful, I can’t do everything. Plain and simple. A good friend of mine named Cameron Herold, founder of backpocketcoo.com, just so happened to post a blog on this whole “Crisis of Meaning” yesterday. Can you talk about timing or what? While a lot of the post didn’t apply to me because I think I’m far from panic mode, there were a few key notes that really hit home. When talking to him later about the post he simply said “Delegate everything except genius”… This makes so much sense! Especially to someone like me who most importantly wants to keep control of creativity. I really want to keep control of everything because I’m just like that, but creative control is priority. The link to Cameron’s blog is at the bottom of this one. You can read it AFTER you’re finished reading mine.

Needless to say, you will be seeing a job posting come up in the next little while… as soon as I figure out how to hire someone. *learning every day*

As crazy as this ride is, I wouldn’t want to be in any other position right now. I’m thankful for every experience I have encountered and have yet to encounter along the way. Not only have I grown in the last year as a cake artist, but as a business owner as well. I am truly valuing my position as an entrepreneur and embracing my community and fellow entrepreneurs so tightly that their eyes may just pop out of their skulls. I am taking advice and making the right moves and moving forward, and forward, and forward. I might just take over the world.

MUCH love,

Sheila (the crazy bitch who just needs to give her head a shake sometimes)

Yes, that’s right everyone! I made Matt Damon’s birthday cake! Here’s how it all went down.

On Friday morning I received a call from a girl who who wanted to order a custom birthday cake…. for that day! Normally if someone tries to order a same day cake, especially on a Friday, I am not able to accommodate on such short notice. However this day was a little different. I was already finished making my orders for the day and was in the middle of delivering them all when I got the call. I thought to myself “I can do this” and then accepted the order. My client was so happy!

So I asked her for the cake details. She said she wanted the cake to feed 100 people, and to be in an outer space theme, and for it to say “Happy Birthday Matt”. She finally mumbled something about the cake being for their lead actor in the movie they were filming. I automatically assumed it was a local, independent film and didn’t ask any more questions.

Closer to the end of the call after confirming all of the details, my client says “Yah…. the cake is for Matt Damon” and I stopped what I was doing and said “What?” and she repeated “The cake is for Matt Damon” Obviously I said “Are you serious” and then she said “Yes, please be here with the cake by 5:00.

This was the cake I came up with.

Matt Damon's Birthday cake

I delivered the cake to his assistant’s office right at 5:00 as requested. I never got to meet him, nor did I get to have any of the photos of him with the cake. The reason is, they all surprised Matt onset with the cake, and no one is allowed to see the props or his costume for this movie yet.

I can’t even believe that Matt Damon, an actor who I absolutely adore, ate the cake that I made for him on his 41st birthday. I was told he loved it and that’s all that matters.

Now don’t get me wrong. I love all my cakes equally… just as though they were all my tiny little puppies, but some just make me so proud to be doing what I’m doing. There’s nothing better than putting the finishing touches on a cake and then taking a step back and thinking “Wow, I actually just made that cake right there!”

Here are a few of my recent faves in no particular order

First of all, this kid freaked out when he saw this cake. He jumped up and down a little with a HUGE smile on his face. And then all of a sudden, his face completely dropped and he looked like he was on the verge of tears. I took a quick look at the cake to make sure it didn't have bird shit on it or something but it was fine. He then said "I'm sad because my dad's going to eat it all" :(" title="Nintendo Birthday Cake" />

Not too shabby but I still have a far way to go. When I delivered this cake, it looked like it was at home. Man I love when that happens!" title="Romantic Wedding Cake" />
